May 23rd. One Month. I don’t even know how to describe what the first month has been like, so I’m just gonna make a list of thoughts and things.
- Lack of sleep. Waking up at odd times to feed/ change babies. Kim has had the worst of it with breast feeding and pumping in addition to everything else. She also handles it like a pro. I try to give her long naps when I can.
- Everything is so new. This is a mixed blessing. Some of it is wonderful and exciting, like watching how much they change from day to day. Some of it is mysterious and odd, like wondering what awaits you in the next diaper. Some of it makes you anxious, like when they get a little bit sick, and you aren’t sure how serious it is.
- Fun. Our kids are fun. Watching them kick around on the blanket for Tummy Time, see how the cats react to them, the funny sounds they make, their little quirks and so on. And to think we get years of playing with them as they grow up. Awesome!
- People reminding us that twins are special. Most of the time it’s the eat, change, sleep cycle. You get a little lost in the work. Then someone smiles with glee when they find out you have twins. And you remember that twins are cool.
- All the help from family. Sometime I plan to update this blog’s about page with a list of everyone involved. Most of those people are family. They’ve helped out so much, the best way I can think of to thank them is to raise the twins the best way we can. That and saying thank you helps too.
That’s just a snapshot of what it’s been like. I go back to work on Tuesday, and I can’t imagine how much I’m going to miss spending time with the twins.
Thank you to everyone for their support and comments. Feel free to ask for pictures, ask questions, or offer suggestions about what you’d like to hear about. But for now, baby boy is crying for something, and Kim needs a nap, so I’ll see what I can do to make both of their lives a little easier.

It’s great to hear the family is doing well! I loathe going back to work after having fun (and right now, I loathe going to work while learning about intersexed individuals… Honestly more interesting than kids wanting video games…)
I hope everything continues to run smoothly for you all. I continue to patiently wait to see the lil ones! I’d love to have you all over for dinner in the new place sometime, so keep me informed of when a good time is.
Love from my tiny family!

Dinner sounds like a plan. I’m back at work tomorrow, but in about 2 weeks I get the week off. Maybe then.

I appreciate your snapshot of the first month. My husband and i cannot even fathom what it is going to be like to bring home 2 babies in August so I have really enjoyed reading your blog. So happy to hear that things are going well. I look forward to reading more about their growth and the exciting times ahead of you.

Eileen, it’s going to be great. Not easy, but the time you spend with your babies is all worth it. It can be very rough at times. At some point they’ll need food, a clean diaper and sleep all at the same time, and you’ll be so tired you can barely keep your eyes open. But later you’ll have met all their needs, they’ll be sleeping peacefully, and you’ll feel wonderful.
Once they’re born, sleep when you can. I mean it. Take short naps at every opportunity. The better rested you are, the better you can take care of them and yourself. They’ll need you at your best. You and your husband will do great if you take care of and support each other.
